File Taxes for Free with MilTax

Military OneSource has launched its free tax software for military members and their families, which takes you to the H&R Block website once you login. The tax software allows users to submit one federal and up to three state tax returns at no cost. It is specifically tailored for military life (think combat pay and multiple moves), and is designed to leave no military service tax deduction or credit unclaimed.

In addition, users can speak via phone with a Military OneSource tax expert, and in-person tax filing assistance is available on military installations at a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance location, which you find here.

When is This Year’s Tax Deadline?

The tax deadline this year is April 17 because the usual April 15 deadline falls on a Sunday, and the following day is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia.

Who Can Use the Software?

The Military OneSource tax resources are available to members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and National Guard, as well as Coast Guardsmen serving under Title 10 authority. Other eligible personnel include retired and honorably discharged members up to 180 days past their separation, as well as spouses, dependent children and survivors.

If there are questions regarding eligibility, people can contact Military OneSource.

As an alternative, for those who have USAA, you can file online with TurboTax, getting access to the Deluxe version of the software, if you go through the USAA Tax Center. This offer is available to AD, Reservists, and National Guard through 15-Mar
