Saturday Critical Action – Review Your Recent Spending

Welcome to the Saturday Critical Action. Each Saturday we take the weekly action from Jonathan Clements‘ blog Humble Dollar and “militarize” it for you. Jonathan Clements was a longtime personal finance columnist for The Wall Street Journal, and he offers great advice at the best price you can get…free. Here is this week’s critical action:

REVIEW YOUR RECENT SPENDING. Which expenditures do you remember with a smile—and which prompt a shrug of the shoulders and maybe even a wince? To jog your memory, look back through your bank and credit card statements. Lavishing dollars on stuff you don’t enjoy? Maybe it’s time to change the way you spend.

This is the other half of becoming financially independent – limiting your spending. While saving can make you wealthy, you’ll never reach your goal of financial independence/freedom if you must drive a Ferrari and stay in the Ritz Carlton to be happy. There’s nothing wrong with a used Toyota and the Hampton Inn.
